The nice thing about being a graphic individual is that you get to see the world and all that’s in it in parts. That is to say, colors, shapes and abstracts. Early on I was absorbed with how landscapes looked or skyscrapers towered over me with their perspective. In the 50's and 60's there really wasn't much room for that kind of thinking but as we entered the computer age opportunities became real. I studied Pharmacy in college and the most interesting thing I can say about that is that some of the pills had wonderful colors. Two toned beauties. Maybe I should have signed on to design those capsules. How about the ones with the "BB's" in them? You know, sustained release medication. Well, that was then. Fast forward to the 90's and computers could do that. Programs like Corel Draw and Photoshop allowed us to choose colors and author objects. Pull them, push them and really use our imaginations. About all we could do with them was design for advertising companies. Pretty boxes for soap or toothpaste and brilliant, attention getting colors for perfume boxes. And then the impossible happened……….enter the internet. I remember I was working help desk in Alpharetta Georgia and my shift manager suggested I author a website. “What”? I asked. A website, a place where people and companies can display their “whatever’s”. You need to be able to write code though. HTML, I was told. I bought the book and became buried in its pages and at the last page and countless of examples I thought I knew how to make a website. Now I could marry my creative talent and be called a website designer. How nice. Finally after all those years a title I could like. So, I began to make website. Five and then ten and then, on and on. Each one different than the last but learning more and more about how the internet displays the colors and images. Each year more and more company’s joined the software ranks with programs that made making a website easier and easier. The one ingredient missing was the creative touch. That way of looking at something and being able to decide if it’s pleasing to look at or just slapped together as some websites are.
